NHL Philadelphia Flyers: Stanley Cup and Remaining Schedule

The Philadelphia Flyers were enjoying an excellent season before the league went on hiatus due to the recent Coronavirus outbreak. If and when the league resumes this season, the Flyers will continue to be among one of the top teams in not only the Eastern Conference but the NHL overall.

 NHL Playoffs and Coronavirus

 The current Coronavirus outbreak has caused virtually all sports on the planet to be suspended, including the NHL. There is no current timeline as to when the NHL will resume but many are expecting it will at least by the start of May, possibly even later.

Initially, a 30-day hiatus was expected but based on recent developments it appears it could be much longer before we see hockey in the United States again.

The NHL Playoffs were supposed to begin on April 8th and that is certainly out of the question now. Most teams still have about 12 games left in the regular season but it is unknown if those games will even be played when the league resumes.

It is possible that the NHL goes directly into the playoff format based on the current standings if the league doesn’t resume until May, June or even July.

The NHL did make a statement after the suspension saying the goal is to “resume play as soon as it is appropriate and prudent so that we will be able to complete the season and award the Stanley Cup.”

In an update to the situation, the NHL said that they want to have “a training camp period roughly 45 days into the 60-day period covered by the CDC’s directive”. That means the NHL would be aiming for April 29th to start training camp, three weeks after the Stanley Cup Playoffs were originally supposed to start.

 NHL Standings: Where the Flyers Sit

 If the NHL does decide to go directly into the playoffs when the league resumes, based on the current standings, the Flyers would be the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference.

The Flyers are currently second in the Metropolitan Division, just one point behind the Washington Capitals. Both the Capitals and Flyers have played 69 games with 13 remaining on their regular-season schedule.

The bad news for the Flyers is that they were the hottest team in the NHL before the season was suspended. Philadelphia was 9-1 in their last 10 games with 18 points. Since January 8th, the Flyers have gone 19-6-1 with 39 points in just 26 games.

Last year’s Stanley Cup Champions, the St. Louis Blues went on an incredible run starting with the new year after a disappointing start to the season. The Flyers appeared to be on that same track this season with their recent performances.

 According to Hockey-Reference.com, the Flyers currently have a 99.7 percent chance to make the playoffs and a 30.5 percent chance to win the Metropolitan Division. If the season plays out, the Flyers are projected to end the season with 104 or 105 points.

 2019-2020 Flyers Schedule

 Assuming the 2019-2020 NHL season does resume, and they do elect to play the remaining regular-season games, the Flyers have some huge games remaining on their schedule. Of their 13 games remaining, 10 of those are against teams that would either be in the playoffs if they started today or just one point out. 

 Some of their biggest remaining games include the Tampa Bay Lightning who are second in the Eastern Conference and the Pittsburgh Penguins, their cross-state rivals who are currently in fifth, right behind the Flyers.
