The essence of spread (handicap) betting is that both teams will have an equal chance to win the game. - P2 ( ) – is a second-team win taking into account the handicap, which are in brackets.
- Positive Handicap– usually marked with a "+" sign, such as Chicago (+7.5) or Las Vegas (+12.5), etc.
- Negative Handicap– usually marked with a "-" sign, such as New York (-3.5) or Philadelphia (-8.5), etc.
- The handicap can also be zero and is marked as follows: Tampa Bay (0) or (0).
What Does -7 Mean in Sports Betting?
When looking at betting lines on a sportsbook, its common in the main lines to see the team names followed by either a (+) or a (-), and then a specific number. This signifies the game spread. The number after the team name tells you the perceived number of points between the two opponents.
Football is one of the most popular sports for spread betting, and one of the most common spreads used for NFL games is seven. So, what does -7 mean in a spread bet? Well, it means two main things.
- This team is perceived to be the favorite (the + sign is for the underdog)
- It also means that team needs to win the game by more than seven points
The entire idea of the spread bet, is to get equal odds on both teams regardless of their abilities. If the sportsbook puts a line with -7, it means they believe that team to be seven points better than the other. By taking this number of points away, in theory, an equal competition has been created for betting.
If you decide to bet the spread on the favorite (-7), than that team will need to win the game by more than seven points for your wager to hit. Betting the spread on the underdog in this game (+7), means that team needs to either win, or simply not lose the game by more than seven points.

- TO ( ) – is a bet on totals of more goals/points/games, etc.
- TU ( ) – is a bet on totals less than goals/points/games, etc.
